Heavy duty-fishtail gouges

The heavy duty-fishtail gouges is mainly used for the rough shaping of wooden objects. It also enables the elaboration of concave shapes on wooden surfaces. In combination with a mallet, for example, a bowl can be shaped manually. This technique is still sometimes used by experienced carvers. The handle of this iron is particularly robust. It is made of hornbeam and is secured by an extra strong steel ferrule to withstand the hardest blows. The special Swiss steel used in this tool stands for high quality and durability.

Shapes and application

You will find this iron in two different cutting edge variants. A hollow cutting edge is mainly used for heavy material removal and for working out depressions in the wood. The burr cutter with a straight cutting edge ground on one side is used for straight chip removal. Depending on the requirements, a cutting edge width of 50mm, 60mm or 80mm can be selected. Each of these tools has a length of 300mm.

The Dräyer gouges, on the other hand, has a straight cutting edge that is ground on both sides and is used for pre-cutting. The slightly slanted cutting edge enables a gentle pull cut and ensures good chip formation.
