Wood finishing is a crucial step in any wood project, and it holds a wealth of possibilities that can shape the character and longevity of your work. But before you pick up a brush, rag or sprayer, there are some important questions to address that can ensure not only the quality, but also the safety and sustainability of your project.
#
What finish is best for the wood you are using?
Different types of wood react differently to certain finishes. Making the right choice can mean the difference between lasting beauty and premature wear.
What look and feel do you want to achieve?
Glossy or matte, smooth or textured - the choice of finish has an impact on the end result.
How can you ensure long-lasting surface durability?
Whether exterior or interior, the right product can help preserve the look of your woodwork for years to come.
Are there sustainable and environmentally friendly finishes?
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Avoiding toxic and environmentally damaging treatments is at the forefront. Wood, a renewable resource, should be treated with natural and environmentally friendly finishes.
Products for surface treatment of wood help to eliminate small blemishes and defects in the surface by smoothing and protecting the wood surface. A high-quality surface treatment also serves to change the desired color and aesthetics of the wood. Although there are different types of wood finishing products, the overall goal is usually the same: to protect the wood, enhance the surface or change its appearance by allowing solids to act and remain from the product.
The basic protection offered by a wood finishing product is that substances are applied to the surface of the wood, penetrate it and bond with it. Wood is a porous material, which means it is full of voids and holes.
These voids can trap dirt and liquids that not only affect the appearance of the wood, but can also lead to other problems such as rot, mold or mildew stains. The goal of finishing wood surfaces is to fill or seal these voids to protect the wood for the long term.
Most types of wood are sensitive to scratches, dents and dirt. Oil and liquids often leave marks on wood items. Exposure to humidity can also affect wood. Lacquer finishes protect wood from all of these effects to varying degrees. In addition, most finishes accentuate the grain and really make it shine.
Penetrating finish products are oil-based and therefore absorbed by the wood. They are easier to apply than surface finishes and give the wood a more natural look.
Surface finishes dry on the wood and form a protective layer.
Paint, polyurethane and shellac are examples. They provide durable protection and are a good choice for heavily used wood items such as outdoor furniture or frequently used countertops.
