Expertise - Wood adhesives

Discover the variety of wood glues and adhesives for gluing jobs. There are several options to choose from depending on the type of joint:

Dispersion glues / PVAc wood glues consist of synthetic resin particles dispersed in water. They are also known as white glues and cure when the water escapes or is absorbed by the material. These wood glues are ready to use, have a good shelf life and are safe for health. However, their stress resistance is limited.

Solvent-based contact adhesives consist of binders dissolved in solvents. Strength is achieved by evaporation of the solvent. These adhesives offer low press time and immediate load-bearing capacity. However, they may contain toxins and have limited stress resistance.

Reaction adhesives cure by chemical reaction and are 100% solids. There are 1K adhesives with one initiator and 2K adhesives in which two reactive substances are mixed. These adhesives offer high durability, but are difficult to handle and may also contain toxins.

Adhesion and cohesion are critical in bonding. Adhesion refers to the force of adhesion at the contact surfaces of two materials, while cohesion describes the cohesion within a material. Sufficient adhesion and cohesion are important for a stable bond. Often, a wood adhesive with lower cohesion than the materials is chosen because a break in the glue joint is easier to repair.
Wood glues and adhesives are classified into different stress groups that indicate their water resistance. In the EU, there are groups D1 to D4, with D1 having the lowest water resistance and D4 the highest. In the US, ANSI Type I and ANSI Type II are used, which have similar properties to the EU groups.
Storage
When storing wood glues and adhesives, a dry environment at temperatures between 15 °C and 20 °C should be selected. Airtight containers such as glue dispensers are recommended to prevent curing.
